Beartooth All American Road

Beartooth All American Road

On the "wild side of Yellowstone" is one of the most scenic drives in the United States, the Beartooth Highway, a National Scenic Byways All-American Road, features breathtaking views of the Absaroka and Beartooth Mountains, and open high alpine plateaus dotted with countless glacial lakes, forested valleys, waterfalls and wildlife. The Beartooth All-American Road passes through what is known today as the Beartooth Corridor. Surrounded by the Custer, Gallatin, and Shoshone National Forests, traveling parallel to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, and abutting Yellowstone National Park, the Highway sits in a million-plus acre wilderness. Visitors have the rare opportunity to experience and explore pristine, untouched alpine and montane landscapes, lush forests, and alpine tundra in the space of a few miles. It is one of the highest and most rugged areas in the lower 48 states, with 20 peaks reaching over 12,000 feet in elevation. In the surrounding mountains, glaciers are found on the north flank of nearly every mountain peak over 11,500 feet high. The Road itself is the highest elevation highway in Wyoming (10,947 feet) and Montana (10,350 feet), and is the highest elevation highway in the Northern Rockies. Recreational opportunities abound in the Beartooth Corridor. Visitors can cross-country or downhill ski in June and July, hike across broad plateaus, and view and photograph wildlife including mountain goats, moose, elk, marmot, mule deer, black bear, grizzly bear, and wolf. Visitors also can take a guided horseback trip, fish for trout in the streams and lakes adjacent to the highway, and camp in the area`s 13 National Forest campgrounds. When the highway is formally closed to automobiles during the winter months, snowmobilers travel roughly the same route and enjoy a spectacular winter wonderland. The Beartooth Highway provides easy access to Yellowstone National Park at its northeast entrance. Three gateway communities - Cooke City and Red Lodge, Montana and Cody, Wyoming put you in the heart of today`s wild wild west. All three communities retain their western heritage then mix it with modern amenities to provide an unparalleled family western vacation.

Carbon County Historical Society

Carbon County Historical Society

Our Mission The mission of the Carbon County Historical Society & Museum is to preserve and communicate the history of the Carbon County area. Carbon County Historical Society & Museum History History is not just about dates, names, and places. Preservation isn’t just about bricks and mortar. Both are about human values…about relationships between individuals and their communities that stretch from the past through the present to the future. The Carbon County Historical Society & Museum has done just that. The museum was first established in 1959 by Alice Greenough to house the collection of her world-renowned rodeo family. The Carbon County Historical Society was formed in 1974 and took over the museum facility in 1980. In 1990, the three-story Labor Temple building was gifted to the Carbon County Historical Society by an anonymous donor. The Labor Temple was built in 1909, entirely by the Red Lodge Miners Local No. 1771, and put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The historical society reopened the museum`s doors with a newly remodeled basement and first floor in 1999. The museum is the home to the Greenough and Linderman rodeo collections, the Waples family gun and projectile point collection, an interactive coal and hard rock mine exhibit, the Carbon County archives, and much more. The staff assists with family genealogy and historic research. The gift shop has a large variety of Carbon County, Montana and Old West historical books and gifts.

Red Lodge Area Chamber of Commerce

Red Lodge Area Chamber of Commerce

Hey and Howdy, Thank you so much for your interest in our beautiful little corner of the world. Red Lodge, nestled in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains, is a wonderful place to visit if you are looking for family fun, a place to touch the wild, or just a chance to let your hair down. Whether you are wearing Birkenstocks or cowboy boots, you will find something to do here. (Although downtown is paved and we even have sidewalks, Jimmy Choos are probably not a great idea!) In winter the road ends here. Downhill skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating, sledding and sleigh riding are just the short list of activities that you can do when visiting us. In summer we revel in the Beartooth Pass opening. We are only 68 miles from Yellowstone Park, but plan on a good two hours drive as the “Pass” is stunning in high mountain vistas, rocky cliffs, and jeweled lakes. The Custer National Forest is a haven for wildlife including elk, moose, mountain goats, big horn sheep, bears (black and grizzly), mountain lions and wolves. Golden marmots are often seen dashing across the trails. Golden and bald eagles often visit our area, as well as sandhill cranes and blue herons. So . . . take your time, drive slowly, give pedestrians and wildlife the right of way, and enjoy your visit. If you have any questions or you would like help in planning your trip, don’t hesitate to call the Red Lodge Area Chamber of Commerce at 1.406.446.1718 or stop in at the Visitors Center/Chamber Office at the north end of town. If you know when you plan on experiencing Red Lodge, call us so we can tell you what is happening in the area! The Beartooth Recreational Trails Association (BRTA) Nordic Skiing and Hiking Trails

The Beartooth Recreational Trails Association (BRTA) Nordic Skiing and Hiking Trails

Welcome to the Beartooth Recreational Trails Association The Beartooth Recreational Trails Association (BRTA) was organized in 2002 for two primary purposes: 1) to continue the winter operations of the Red Lodge Nordic Center (RLNC), and 2) to promote year round non-motorized trail systems along the Beartooth front. We work closely with the Forest Service, the City of Red Lodge and other organizations to create and expand future trails. We have attracted many supporters and are an official 501(c)3 non-profit. The RLNC continues to grow with new skiers and new trails, and we are involved with Rocky Fork Trails, the Red Lodge trail planning and development process. Support BRTA and keep nordic skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, biking, and horseback riding priorities in our community! Sign up for our electronic newsletter for events, trail conditions, volunteer opportunities and more! Or attend a monthly BRTA Board meeting - every second Wednesday, 6:30 at the RLACF building across the street from the post office (13th & Oakes Ave). Want some fresh air, this is the perfect family activity. Click here for more information on the Nordic ski center.
